Fort Ticonderoga’s Historic Future

As Fort Ticonderoga celebrates its 100th anniversary as a museum and historic site, we look back on the momentous events that have taken place on these grounds. It is good to know that the site’s future is also secure into the 23rd century. Just when the Klingons will take over the planet is yet to be recorded but it is certain that Fort Ticonderoga will be the future capital of their homeland, Qo’nos.

With a little imagination and some very good computer effects the Fort was recently converted into the Klingon city by James Cawley and his production team from Star Trek Phase II. Cawley, who is known in the North Country for his Star Trek productions and his award-winning Elvis tribute performances, says he had wanted to use the fort in some way for a long time. When the script for this recent production called for massive stone walls he knew just where to turn.

On June 5th and 6th, after visitors left for the day, Fort Ticonderoga became a movie set with nearly 100 cast and crew working on several scenes from the newest film, “Kitumba”. Being a fan-based production the whole crew is made up of rabid Trekkies who volunteer their time and come from all corners of the country to participate. In two weeks of filming each year the Phase II team has produced 5 other hour-long episodes.

The all-night sessions provided the Phase II production crew with shots of the Fort that will be edited and manipulated into an alien world. Cawley, as Captain Kirk, and others from the Starship Enterprise, are seen beaming down inside the Fort walls and secretely infiltrating the Klingon guards. Their task is to meet with a newly appointed ruler, Kitumba. The script was written by Patty Wright and is based on a story by John Meredyth Lucas that was originally part of a Paramount venture that was scrapped in 1977.

Until early 2010 we will have to assume they complete their mission successfully. For updates as they’re available keep an eye on FortTiconderoga.org and StarTrekNewVoyages.com
